Commonly Asked Questions

Q. When Should I take my child to an Orthodontist?

A. Children can be evaluated for orthodontic health at about seven years of age.   It might seem as though that is a very young age, but catching abnormal growth patterns or harmful habits early can allow some early intervention that could result in avoiding later treatment or allowing that treatment to be more effective.  Some children may require treatment before the age of 7.  When there is an orthodontic problem or concern, an orthodontic evaluation is appropriate regardless of age.

Q. What new methods are there for orthodontic problems today?

A. Today orthodontic treatment is directed toward three main objectives: developing a functional bite, a healthy jaw joint and a great smile.  But in order to achieve these orthodontic treatment focuses on helping young patients' jaw in a balanced and harmonic way.  Once jaw growth is under control, attention can be directed at aligning the teeth.  This approach improves the possibility of achieving a symmetrical face, an acceptable profile, good chewing function and a pleasing dental appearance.

Q. what new braces are there available for orthodontic treatment today?

A. The "new" braces are smaller than ever, smoother and designed to move teeth faster than ever before.  The wires we use have "memory" so that they act over a longer period of time decreasing the number and frequency of visits to the office.  many of our jaw aligning appliances are "hands free" meaning that you don't have to remember to put anything on or in your mouth. Tooth alignment is also available without braces using a series of clear aligners called Invisalign. Both doctors are Invisalign certified to do this treatment.

Q. What can I expect at my first visit?

A. The first visit is complimentary (not based on referral from the Internet or friend etc, and a thorough tooth and jaw examination will be performed.   Ample doctor time is scheduled to review your concerns and preliminary treatment options.  You will receive several materials explaining your problem and if you are ready for treatment, studies (x-rays, photos, moulds of your teeth) may be taken.  If necessary a second treatment conference will be arranged to explain your situation an discuss additional treatment options.  Some youngsters are not ready for treatment after the first visit.  We will explain their current situation and place the youngster on periodic observation until it is appropriate to begin treatment.

Q. What do I do if:

  • I lose a separator? Use the separator instruction sheet we provided and try to replace it yourself.  If you don't feel comfortable doing it, give us a call.
  • I have a poking wire? Use the orthodontic wax provided by softening it between your fingers and pressing it on the offending wire end.  If the offending wire is a light tie wire, you can bend it in with a clean eraser or the end of a clean spoon handle.   Do give the office a call so we can adjust the wire at your earliest convenience.
  • I break a wire? Use wax if necessary to stay comfortable.  Call the office to arrange an appointment for replacing the wire.
